One of the most important benefits you can receive as a Soldier is money to further your education or pay off existing student loans. While skills training in the Army National Guard is always a priority, so is encouraging Soldiers to attend college or take continuing education courses.

Train part-time, study full-time - You can serve your country while attending school full time. If you join the National Guard while you are still in high school, you will be able to complete most of your Military obligation by the time you graduate from college.

When you complete Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training, you will be eligible for the Montgomery G.I. Bill and the Army National Guard College Fund, which is the Guard's supplement to the Montgomery G.I. Bill.

Many of your educational benefits kick in as soon as you enlist. These include free SAT and GRE testing, CLEP exams and Federal Tuition Assistance.

The Army National Guard funds up to 100% of tuition costs and fees, not to exceed $250 per semester hour and will be limited to $4500 per person per fiscal year. Consult your local recruiter for the policy for the current fiscal year. Tuition Assistance may be used in addition to the Montgomery G.I. Bill, Army National Guard G.I. Bill Kicker, Active Duty Montgomery G.I. Bill and Pell Grants.

  • Total Annual Pay and Benefits: $7,475


State Tuition Waiver (STW) - Exclusively for Maryland National Guard

  • All Community Colleges in Maryland only offer MDARNG soldiers 50% off tuition.
  • All Maryland Supported Colleges and Universities only offer MDARNG soldiers 25% to 50% off tuition.
  • Loyola College and Washington College only offer MDARNG soldiers 50% off tuition.
  • Applies to Undergraduate and Graduate courses.
  • STW can be used with other state and federal education benefits.

Federal Tuition Assistance (FTA) - Exclusive to Army National Guard

  • Reimbursement for up to six credit hours per semester; 15 credit hours per fiscal year.
  • Reimbursement up to 75% of tuition to a maximum set amount for Undergraduate and Graduate courses.
  • Federal Tuition Assistance is a part of the Army Continuing Education System (ACES).
  • Can now be used with the Montgomery G.I. Bill..
  • FTA can be used with other state and federal education benefits.

State Tuition Assistance (STA) - Exclusively for Maryland National Guard

  • Reimburses up to 50% off tuition for eligible schools.
  • Maryland Soldiers must maintain a 2.0 GPA per class.
  • Money is paid upon successful completion of semester.
  • Applies to Undergraduate and Graduate courses.
  • STA can be used with other state and federal education benefits.
