The Red Phase (Phase I) is the soldierization phase. According to the new soldiers, it's the hardest part. It teaches discipline, honor and integrity. This phase reinforcses the Warrior's confidence, spirit of teamwork, personal courage and trust in their fellow Warrior.

The Drill Sergeant serves as coach, trainer and mentor with a strong personal interest in the Warrior's successful completion of BCT. It's their mission to train and prepare disciplined, combat-ready Warriors.

This phase encompasses weeks 1-3 of IET (Initial Entry Training) and consists of an environment of total control, where active, involved, positive leaders begin transforming volunteers into Soldiers through the Soldierization process. Training is focused on immersion in the Army's core values, traditions, Warrior Ethos, and ethics; the development of individual basic combat skills, teamwork, and physical training (PT). Specific goals for Soldiers in Phase I include, but are not limited to-

  1. Pass all Phase I training.
  2. Pay strict attention to detail.
  3. Conform to established standards.
  4. Begin to work effectively as a team member.
  5. Master basic skills.
  6. Maintain individual and platoon areas.
  7. Develop physical fitness consistent with time in training.
